Delta and Theta in Plain English

In short

Delta measures an option's sensitivity to stock price moves and theta measures its daily time decay, and the two often work against each other in a single position.

Delta rewards you for being right about direction. Theta charges you rent for every day you're waiting to be proven right.

Direction versus time, working against each other

Delta tells you how much an option's price is expected to move when the stock moves $1. Theta tells you how much value the option loses each day just from time passing, even with the stock unchanged. They're the two forces beginners run into first, because they describe the two most intuitive things acting on an option's price: direction and time.

Delta isn't fixed — it's a snapshot. A far-OTM option might have a delta near 0.10; if the stock rallies hard enough to push it ITM, delta can climb toward 0.80 or higher. As delta rises, the option behaves more like the stock itself; as it falls, it behaves more like a fading side bet.

Theta isn't a flat daily charge either — it typically steepens as expiration nears, especially in the final few weeks. An option with 90 days left might barely lose value overnight; the same option with 5 days left can lose a noticeably larger chunk, simply because there's so much less time left for the stock to move in its favor.

Worked example

You hold an XYZ $50 call with a delta of 0.35 and a theta of -0.04, priced at $2.10. One day passes, and XYZ rises $0.50.

The stock moved in your favor, yet the option only gained $0.14 instead of the full $0.18 delta suggested — theta quietly ate part of the gain.

Key takeaway: Even when you're right about direction, theta is charging you every single day — being right slowly can still lose money.
