Privacy Policy

Your privacy is important to us. This privacy policy explains how AskProsper ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our website, and applies to visitors worldwide. This policy should be read together with our Terms of Service.

Information We Collect

  • Account information: your email address and password (stored securely, never in plain text) when you register.
  • Subscription information: your email address if you subscribe to receive new-article notifications.
  • Basic usage data: pages visited, approximate geographic location derived from your IP address, referring site, and browser/device type, collected in aggregate to understand how our content is used. Your precise IP address is not retained — see "Cookies and Tracking" below.

How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and improve our services and website experience
  • To send relevant communications and updates you've opted into
  • To understand aggregate traffic patterns and popular content
  • To comply with legal obligations

Cookies and Tracking

We use a small number of first-party cookies:

  • Strictly necessary: to keep you signed in, protect forms from cross-site request forgery, and remember your cookie consent choice. These cannot be disabled and do not require consent under applicable law.
  • Analytics: we log page visits in aggregate, including an approximate geographic location (country/region) derived from your IP address at the time of your visit. We do not use a persistent tracking cookie to identify you across visits, and we do not track individual visitors by name or account. Your raw IP address is discarded shortly after the approximate location is determined and is never stored long-term or shown to anyone.

A cookie banner lets you accept or decline non-essential cookies on your first visit. You can also manage or delete cookies at any time via your browser settings. If you subscribed to article-notification emails, you can opt out at any time via the link in each email or our Cancel My Subscription page.

Third-Party Service Providers

We use the following providers to operate the site. Each processes only the minimum data needed for its purpose:

  • SendGrid — delivers account confirmation, password reset, and article-notification emails.
  • Anthropic — assists in drafting article content; no visitor personal data is shared with this provider.
  • ipinfo.io — resolves an IP address to an approximate country/region for aggregate traffic analytics; raw IP addresses are not retained after this lookup.
  • Our hosting and database provider, who store the data described in this policy on our behalf.

Sharing Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with the service providers listed above, each bound by their own confidentiality and data-protection obligations.

Data Retention

Account information is retained while your account remains active. Aggregate traffic data (page visits, approximate location) is retained only as long as useful for understanding site trends and is not linked to your identity. Raw IP addresses are discarded within minutes of collection, once an approximate location has been resolved.

Data Security

We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures — including encrypted password storage and access controls — to protect your information from unauthorized access or disclosure.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal data, including to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten")
  • Restrict or object to certain processing
  • Receive a copy of your data in a portable format
  • Withdraw cookie consent at any time

California residents (CCPA/CPRA): you have the right to know what personal information we collect and to request its deletion. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

EU/UK/EEA residents (GDPR): the rights above apply to you in full. Our lawful basis for processing account data is performance of our service to you; for aggregate analytics, it is our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the site, balanced against your privacy through the data-minimization practices described above.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below.

International Visitors

AskProsper is accessible globally. By using the site, you understand that your information may be processed in a country other than your own, which may have different data protection laws than your home country. We take reasonable steps to ensure your data is treated securely and in accordance with this policy wherever it is processed.

Children's Privacy

AskProsper is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We encourage you to review it periodically. Material changes will be reflected by an updated date on this page.
