0DTE Options Just Hit Record Volume. Here's What That Same-Day Clock Actually Risks.
Cboe's Q2 2026 volume report showed record trading in zero-days-to-expiration (0DTE) options, contracts that expire the same day they're traded. This piece explains what 0DTE options are, why theta decay, gamma, and pin risk all intensify as expiration approaches, and walks through a real worked example of how a seemingly small trade can turn into an outsized loss within a single session. A record nobody outside options trading noticed
On July 6, 2026, Cboe Global Markets reported record trading volume across its options exchanges for the second quarter, including a new high in same-day options activity.
SPX (S&P 500 index) options expiring the same day they were traded set a quarterly average of 3.1 million contracts a day and a monthly record of 3.3 million in June. Total volume across Cboe's four options exchanges hit 21.9 million contracts a day for the quarter — also a record.
These are contracts known as 0DTE — "zero days to expiration." And whether or not you've ever placed one, the growth of this market is worth understanding, because it's reshaping how volatility moves through stocks investors commonly hold.
What "0DTE" actually means
Every listed option has an expiration date. A 0DTE option is simply one that's expiring today — the last day it can be exercised or assigned. Since 2022, when Cboe rolled out S&P 500 index options expiring on every weekday instead of just the traditional Friday cycle, traders have been able to buy or sell a contract that lives and dies within a single session.
That compressed lifespan is the entire appeal — and the entire risk. A trader isn't betting on where a stock or index will be next month. They're betting on where it will be by 4 p.m. today.
Why the clock changes the math
Three mechanical forces make 0DTE options behave differently from a contract with weeks left on it:
Time decay (theta). Every option loses value as it approaches expiration, all else equal — that's the cost of the time left for the bet to play out. On a 0DTE contract, that entire decay happens in one day instead of being spread over weeks. Decay isn't linear either: it accelerates through the session, meaning value can evaporate fastest in the final hour before the close.
Gamma. This measures how fast an option's directional sensitivity changes as the underlying stock or index moves. Gamma is highest for at-the-money contracts right before expiration — which describes most 0DTE trades by definition. In practical terms, a small move in the S&P 500 in the last 30 minutes of trading can swing a 0DTE position's value far more violently than the same move would on a contract expiring next month.
Pin risk. As expiration nears, the hedging activity of large market makers can pull a stock or index toward strike prices where a lot of contracts are outstanding. That can produce unpredictable, seemingly random price action late in the session — right when 0DTE positions are most sensitive to it.
What that looks like in dollars
FINRA, the brokerage industry's self-regulator, has published a simple illustration of how this compresses risk (from its investor-education piece "Trading Options: Understanding Assignment"). Imagine selling an uncovered call — one written without owning the underlying shares to deliver if assigned — at a $50 strike when the stock is trading at $40, collecting $1,000 in premium across the position.
If the stock stays below $50, the trade looks like a winner. But if the stock instead rallies to $60 by expiration, that same position can produce a loss of roughly $9,000, because the seller has to deliver stock worth $60 for only $50 — a $10-per-share shortfall that swamps the $1,000 premium collected.
That's the core lesson: a trade that looks profitable with an hour left on the clock can flip into a meaningful loss before the closing bell, especially for anyone selling options without owning an offsetting position. Selling uncovered ("naked") calls carries theoretically unlimited loss potential, since there's no cap on how high a stock can go.
Why this is happening more, not less
Cboe's broader industry research found that 0DTE volume across all underlying stocks and indexes is up more than 46% year-to-date in 2026 — a sign of broadening participation well beyond large institutional desks.
Separately, a FINRA rule change that took effect June 4, 2026, replaced the old $25,000 minimum-equity threshold for frequent day traders with a more flexible, real-time margin framework — a shift regulators themselves flagged as relevant to intraday activity like 0DTE trading.
What this means if you trade 0DTE
Record volume doesn't mean 0DTE options are broken or that no one should trade them — plenty of experienced traders use short-dated contracts deliberately, for hedging or defined-risk spread strategies (as opposed to uncovered positions like the example above). What the data does mean is that a rapidly growing share of the options market is now concentrated into positions with almost no room for error on timing. Understanding theta, gamma, and pin risk isn't optional homework for anyone considering a same-day trade — it's the difference between knowing what you're actually exposed to and finding out the hard way at 3:45 p.m.
